Volunteer with your family and bring everyone together for a meaningful day of compassion!

Specifically designed for families, Family Kindness in Action provides a fun and educational way for families to participate in a volunteer project and experience HSHV together, giving back to animals in need. The program consists of a short presentation about HSHV, a volunteer activity, a shelter tour, and an animal meet-and-greet.

Who can participate? The Family Kindness in Action program welcomes participants of all ages, though the volunteer activity is best geared toward children 6 and up. We do ask that there is at least one adult (18+) per 2 children.

When? We offer the Family Kindness in Action program 3 Saturdays (January, April, September) a year from 10-11:30 a.m.

What will we be doing? The Family Kindness in Action program always consists of a short presentation about HSHV, a volunteer activity, a shelter tour, and an animal meet-and-greet. The volunteer activity is dependent upon which month you participate. Below details the volunteer activity for each month:

January: Decorating and making sock rice warmers for HSHV’s Rescue department. Sock rice warmers help keep wildlife and baby animals warm during transport in the cold winter months!

April: Building fun houses out of cardboard boxes for HSHV’s feline friends! Cardboard cat houses are not only a fun hiding/sleeping place for cats, but they can also help catch the eye of a potential adopter!

September: Making enrichment for HSHV’s animals. Enrichment is an all-in-one game and treat that helps keeps animals’ brains and bodies busy while they spend time in their kennels.

Is there a fee? Yes. To help offset the cost of materials and provide care for the animals in our care, we ask for a fee of $10 per person (adults and children). If this creates a hardship, please reach out to us for options.

What should we wear? We recommend wearing clothing that you don’t mind potentially getting dirty. For your safety, we also require closed-toed shoes to be worn.

What if we need to cancel? Please contact the Humane Education team at humaneed@hshv.org if you need to cancel. Cancellations made at least two weeks before the program will be refunded in full. Cancellations made within two weeks of the program date will not be refunded, though we may be able to transfer your registration to a future date.

Important Information: Peanut/Dairy Allergies: Our shelter regularly uses peanut butter and cheese with dogs and we are not a peanut free environment. We cannot guarantee that participants will not come into contact with peanut butter, cheese or other allergens.
